Markets Kick Off New Year With a Tug of War. Bulls Have the Early Lead.

The new year on Wall Street kicked off with a tug of war between stock market bulls and bears. The bulls are barely holding on.

The major indexes all kicked off 2025 trading with solid gains that disappeared as some market participants opted to sell the initial pop. But by 9:40 a.m. ET, the major indexes came roaring back on a wave of dip buying. Now they’re slipping again.

The Dow is up just 73 points, or 0.2%. The S&P 500 is up 0.3%. The Nasdaq Composite is up 0.3%.
