Watch: Heated domes protect pitches in icy weather

Football and rugby clubs have turned to special heated domes to make sure they can keep playing during winter.

Northampton Saints and Cambridge United have hired the kit, which covers the entire pitch, heating it with LPG gas to prevent freezing.

Head groundsman at Cambridge Ian Darler estimated it would cost about £2,000 for two days of use but believed it was worth it.

He said: "When you work out the value of that against losing a game, the food cost alone, what you'd throw away would be more than that."
